  1. The Hourglass

From the recording The Hourglass

When you listen to this you'll understand why it's the title track. nothing else could be, really, with this on the record!  This was my biggest labor of love and the most musically self indulgent song in this collection.  You won't hear a song like this on pop radio! ha! "The Hourglass" started as a classical piano idea which was the chorus progression and just kept unraveling into this very expansive and powerful tune that takes you on a real musical trip!  This one was a lot of fun to craft, develop and bring to life... Lyrically, at the time I was somewhat influenced by what was happening in Afghanistan, but at the core of it - it's really a song about our humanity.

Lyrics

The Hourglass

From high upon a hill she gazes down upon the city lights
a million people rushing 'round inside their formulated lives
driven by the dream of better days
butterflies all captive in an endless maze

Ah ah, ah ah, Lost inside the Hourglass
ah ah, ah ah, Trying to make each moment last
Trying to find the answer in a grain of sand

Across the desert far away the soldiers march in time as one
All startin' out to save the world and now they're not quite sure what from
it's just another story on TV
Tell me where's the hope without the remedy?

Ah ah, ah ah, Lost inside the Hourglass
ah ah, ah ah, Trying to make each moment last
Trying to find the answer in a grain of sand

Horses dancing up and down as the caruosel keeps
Spinning round and round in it's circle game
while the organ plays
Just leaves upon a tree, swirling 'round and floating
on a summer's breeze
Towards a destiny, that remains unseen
Still a mystery...

And as the curtain parts upon the stage
So the sun will rise upon another day

Ah ah, ah ah, Lost inside the Hourglass
ah ah, ah ah, Trying to make each moment last
Trying to find the answer in a grain of sand

But we'll do the best we can inside the Hourglass...
